What to Expect
Your Consultation
- You’ll be asked about your symptoms, how the injury or condition happened (if relevant), and how it’s affecting your daily life or sport
- Bring any previous scans, X-rays, or referral letters
- A physical examination will assess movement, strength, and stability
- Further imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI) may be arranged if needed
Sports Injuries
- Assessment focuses on getting you back to your sport safely, not just resolving symptoms
- Many injuries can be managed without surgery — splinting, activity modification, and guided rehabilitation
- If surgery is needed, timing is planned around your season or event schedule where possible
- You’ll receive a clear return-to-play timeline, often in coordination with physiotherapists or your team medical staff
Fracture Surgery
- Same-day or short-stay procedure in most cases, usually under general or regional anaesthetic
- A splint or cast is applied after surgery to protect the repair
- Follow-up X-rays check healing at set intervals
- Hand therapy usually begins within the first few weeks to restore movement and strength
- Most fractures are healed enough for light use by 6 weeks, with full recovery over 3 months
Joint Replacement
- A pre-operative assessment confirms the joint is suitable for replacement
- Surgery is typically a day case or one-night stay
- A period of splinting protects the new joint while soft tissue heals
- Hand therapy plays a key role in regaining movement and function
- Most patients see significant pain relief early on, with grip strength improving gradually over several months
Recovery & Follow-Up
- You’ll have a follow-up appointment to check healing and progress
- Hand therapy is often recommended to optimise your outcome
- Dr Sami Hassan will guide you on when it’s safe to return to work, sport, or normal activities
